My name is Debra Shelden. I am the proud mother of 2 wonderful young men. I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Special Education and as a teacher, specialized in working with pervasively developmentally delayed and autistic people. I have also been an amateur actress since my teenage years.
I am now a birth and postpartum doula, a childbirth educator, a lactation educator, a certified Happiest Baby on the Block educator. I received my doula training from the Seattle Midwifery School in 2001. I am certified with DONA International and PALS Doulas. I participated in an intensive lactation training at Evergreen Hospital to become a lactation educator. I have served as the Washington State Representative for DONA International and on the Board of Directors of Postpartum Support International of Washington State. Most recently I served as the coordinator for the Apprenticeship Program for PALS Doulas and sat on the REACHE Board of Directors.
I have a special interest and commitment to working with women who have a history of sexual abuse and traumatic birth. I trained with Penny Simkin, author of When Survivors Give Birth. Please contact me for information.
I stay current with the issues surrounding birth and parenting by attending conferences, workshops and advanced doula trainings. Click here to see a list of the trainings that I have attended.
“Debra, there aren’t words to express our appreciation for the role you played in J’s birth. I know in my heart that your presence, support, consultation and caring raised both B and my confidence in our ability to accomplish what we did. I’m very proud of myself and of my beautiful family. We will never forget how your wonderful spirit washed over us during this confusing and amazing time. Thank you for absolutely everything!” W. and family
